Child Development Overview

Key Stage 4

Child Development is offered as a Cambridge National Level Qualification. This subject provides an interesting and stimulating programme of study. Students will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of human needs and learn a range of topics to enhance their understanding of how our children develop in a modern world.

During the course students will study;

  • Health and well-being for child development; including the roles and responsibilities of parenthood, from pre-conception through antenatal to postnatal care. Students develop an appreciation of the importance of creating the best conditions for a child to thrive.
  • Equipment and nutritional needs of children from birth to five years, learning about the range of equipment and nutritional and hygiene requirements of children from birth to five years, and demonstrate in a practical activity how these needs are met to promote a child’s development and well-being.
  • Developmental norms of children from birth to five years and the impact of play on the developmental norms. They apply and demonstrate their knowledge and understanding through practical activities.

Future Pathways and Careers

Level 3 Health and Social Care and Child Development. Possible careers: midwifery, nursing, social work, nursery worker, care worker, teacher, early year support worker.
