Maths

An understanding of Mathematics is vital to provide the numeracy skills to allow us to get by in everyday life. On another level, there is an inherent beauty and wonder in Mathematics which students have the opportunity to discover.

All Mathematics rooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards, which allow access to a range of resources including the Internet to enhance learning and understanding.

The Mathematics department is equipped with a class set of laptops and iPads, allowing all classes to use a variety of software packages.  These range from dynamic graphing tools, like Desmos and Autograph, to apps designed to consolidate the students’ basic understanding of the key aspects of numeracy.  The department also has access to the Just Maths website to support students in their independent study.  To further support students learning the department runs a homework clinic on Tuesday lunchtimes and, for those with greater need, specialist Mathematics learning mentors are able to provide targeted small group support.

All students follow national guidance, but are set according to ability so they are studying at a level that provides suitable challenge and support of their needs. Set changes can occur at any time, but usually take place once every half term.  Students’ progress is regularly monitored through ongoing assessment tasks and more formal examinations; these are used to inform teachers planning and ensure that targeted support can be provided.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4 we follow the AQA Mathematics 8300 linear specification. The examination is assessed at two tiers.  The Higher tier assesses Grades 9-4, whilst the Foundation tier assesses Grades 5-1. There are 3 equally weighted papers; one non-calculator and two that require the use of a calculator.

Key Stage 5

At Key Stage 5 we also follow the AQA specification where students study 6 equally weighted modules; four Core, one Statistics and one Decision. Our most able students in the sixth form are able to study AS or A2 level Further Mathematics and this extends their skills and introduces new concepts, including Mechanics, which will greatly support them to pursue further study and/or careers in a number of fields.

Throughout the year we have numerous students across all year groups who take part in the UK Mathematics Challenge. We also host a variety of cross curricula events linking classroom Mathematics to science and industry, enabling students to gain a practical understanding of how Mathematics provides a strong foundation to, and is of great use in, numerous career paths.

The tables below provide details of the programme of study for each year group.
