Noel-Baker Academy student shortlisted for Derby Youth Mayor

Noel-Baker Academy is celebrating after one of its students was selected as a finalist in the Derby Youth Mayor Election.

Year 11 student Zara Mujanovic-Thornhill is among the young people shortlisted for the role, which represents the voice of children and young people across the city.

The Youth Mayor works with Derby City Council to represent young people at public events and official meetings, including Council Cabinet and Children and Young People Scrutiny. The role also involves chairing Voices in Action Youth Council meetings, visiting schools across the city and raising awareness of the positive contribution young people make to Derby.

If elected, Zara hopes to focus on addressing the pressures young people face through social media, improving safety for young people in Derby and increasing awareness of career opportunities available to them.

Voting is now open, with young people across Derby able to cast their ballots through their schools.

Following the close of voting, a count will take place on Thursday 5th February, with the result announced at the Voices in Action meeting on Monday 9th February.

Reflecting on her shortlisting, Zara said:

“It means a lot to be selected as a finalist. I want to make sure young people feel listened to and supported, especially when it comes to social media pressures, staying safe and understanding the opportunities available to them after school. Being Youth Mayor would give me the chance to represent others and help make a positive difference across the city.”

Clare Pedlar, Assistant Headteacher at Noel-Baker Academy, said:

“I have had the privilege of supporting Zara on her journey, and the transformation has been remarkable. She was up against 14 exceptionally strong candidates, so reaching the final four is an outstanding achievement in itself – but we have every confidence that she can go all the way. The real message here is the incredible growth Zara has shown. From a shy young lady to someone now speaking confidently in front of hundreds of voters, her development has been inspirational. We couldn’t be prouder of her.”

Paul Greenough, Headteacher at Noel-Baker Academy, said:

“We are incredibly proud of Zara for being shortlisted for this role. She is a thoughtful and committed student who is passionate about issues affecting young people. The Youth Mayor programme gives students a powerful platform to develop confidence, leadership and a sense of civic responsibility, and Zara would be an excellent representative for young people in Derby.

“At Noel-Baker Academy, we are committed to encouraging our students to engage with their communities and develop the confidence to speak up on issues that matter to them.”
