The academy, which is part of L.E.A.D. Academy Trust, welcomed pupils from Shelton Junior School and Oakwood Junior School to take part in a series of interactive activities designed to spark curiosity about physics and the wonders of space.
Led by members of the Noel-Baker STEM Club and Ogden Trust Physics Ambassadors, the event gave younger pupils the opportunity to explore scientific concepts through engaging demonstrations and practical challenges.
Pupils heard talks about the phases of the moon and enjoyed short presentations from Noel-Baker STEM ambassadors on topics including how rockets launch into space, life as an astronaut and the life cycle of stars.
They also explored student-run science stalls featuring demonstrations on rocket science and forces, explanations of gravity, scale models of the solar system and discussions about the challenges astronauts face in space.
One of the highlights of the event was a STEM engineering challenge, where pupils worked in teams to design and build parachutes for a returning space capsule. Using their knowledge of gravity, air resistance and forces, teams tested which design slowed the capsule’s descent most effectively.
The fair was supported by the Ogden Trust, a charity dedicated to strengthening physics education and ensuring young people from all backgrounds can access high-quality physics learning.
“This event has been a brilliant opportunity for our students to step into leadership roles and apply their STEM knowledge in a meaningful, real-world context. Supporting younger pupils through hands-on activities has helped them develop confidence, communication and teamwork skills that extend far beyond the classroom. They have been excellent role models, and it’s inspiring to see that passion for science being passed on to the next generation.”
“It was fantastic to welcome pupils from local primary schools to Noel-Baker for such an exciting and engaging event. Opportunities like this allow young people to experience science in a hands-on and inspiring way. At Noel-Baker Academy, we are committed to promoting STEM education and creating opportunities that inspire the next generation of innovators.”
